How To Positively Enable

The definition of enable is to help someone to do something.  However, sometimes when we help we acutally just end up doing something for someone.  Yes, we think we are helping.  In actuality, we aren't really teaching them how to do it or empowering them to try with support.  They never really feel like they can do it because it was done for them.

Can you describe a time in which you may have negatively enabled someone, even though you maybe meant to just help them.
For example, when someone is climbing and you use your body weight to lift them to reach back on to the wall vs. guiding them with words, tips, strategies and inspiration to do it for themselves.

Think about it.

1.  Describe a time you negatively enabled or were enabled yourself in this way....

2.  Describe a time you positively enabled someone or were empowered positively by someone else.

  1. A time I negatively enabled someone was when my friend asked for my help on homework, but said I was too busy watching Tv. A time I positively enabled someone was when I helped my mom carry boxes when we were moving.

  2. One time, I tried to help my friend with homework, but I kind of did one of the problems for them. I realized afterwards that that wasn't helping them because they probably didn't even understand the problem. One time, I was at dance and I didn't understand a combination. My friend went through it all with me, and eventually I got it!

  3. When I was doing my homework and my dad just showed me the answers without telling me how to do it.

Related to my first answer is when my brother was struggling with math and I just told him the answers.

  4. Whenever I try and help this girl (not naming names), I always mean it in a positive way nut she takes it as negative and I never know why and always end up feeling negative.

When I am helping someone on homework, I try to give them tips so that they can do it themselves!

  8. One time I wanted to help something, but I ended up making it even worse. (It is always resolved at the end.)

I once positively enabled someone when I help them by getting stuff for them. (For cooking or projects)

  10. One time I negatively enabled someone was that I was helping my 4th grade friend (not Zoe) with homework and I told her the answer.

A time that I positively enabled someone was helping them with MAPS and helping them with the problem solving by giving them a hint.

  12. One time I was trying to tell a new company member in my ballet company on Opening Night (during the show) to go to their places, and she didn"t, so I ended up going without her. That was a negative enable because I gave up trying to get her attention.
